The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built on an island off the coast of Egypt more than 2,000 years ago. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The tower helped guide ships safely into the busy harbour.
The lighthouse was very tall, and its light could be seen from many kilometres away. Parts of it were damaged by earthquakes over the centuries, and it eventually fell into ruin.
