The Olmecs were one of the first major civilisations in Mesoamerica, living in what is now southern Mexico. They built large cities and are famous for giant stone heads carved from basalt. Some of the heads are more than three metres tall.
Olmec culture influenced many later civilisations in the region, including the Maya. Their art, writing and religious ideas spread widely across Mesoamerica.
