Ancient Carthage

Carthage was a powerful city-state in North Africa, near modern Tunis. It was a major trading power, with ships that travelled across the Mediterranean. Carthage fought long wars with the Romans, which shaped the history of both cities.

The Carthaginian general Hannibal crossed the Alps with elephants to attack Rome. Carthage was eventually defeated and destroyed by the Romans in 146 BCE.
