Pole Vault

Pole vault is an athletics event in which athletes use a long, flexible pole to lift themselves over a high bar. Athletes sprint down a runway, plant the pole in a box and swing upwards. They must clear the bar and land safely on a soft mat.

Modern vaulting poles are made from carbon fibre, which bends and stores energy before springing back. The pole is chosen to suit the athlete's weight and speed. Pole vault takes years of training to master the timing and technique.
