Atoms

Everything is made of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms have a nucleus in the middle with electrons zooming around it.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

A single drop of water contains billions of billions of atoms.

All about Atoms

Everything around you, including air, water and your own body, is made of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms are so small that millions of them could fit on the head of a pin.

An atom has a central nucleus made of protons and neutrons, with electrons moving around it. Atoms of the same element all have the same number of protons. Atoms join together in groups called molecules to make all the substances we know.

Real-life uses of Atoms

  • Understanding how medicines and materials are made
  • Explaining why some metals conduct electricity
  • Building computer chips from carefully arranged atoms

Frequently asked questions about Atoms

What is an atom?

The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element.

What are the parts of an atom?

Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus, and electrons move around the outside.

Are atoms visible?

Not with normal eyes or even a light microscope. Special microscopes can show individual atoms as tiny bumps on a surface.
