The Lock and Key

Locks and keys were used in ancient times to protect homes and treasures. Early keys were made of wood or metal and had to match a specific lock mechanism. Modern locks use more complicated designs to keep belongings safe.

Some of the earliest known locks were made in ancient Egypt and used wooden pins to hold a bolt in place. A key lifted the pins so the bolt could slide open.
