The Lighthouse

A lighthouse is a tall tower with a bright light that guides ships safely past dangerous coasts and rocks. Early lighthouses used fires, and later ones used lamps and lenses to make the light stronger. Lighthouses are still important navigation tools.

The first lighthouse was built more than 2,000 years ago on the island of Pharos in Egypt. Its light was one of the wonders of its time.
