Evolution

Over many generations, living things change slowly. Those best suited to their environment survive and pass on their features. This is called natural selection.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

Charles Darwin sailed to the Galapagos Islands and studied finches.

All about Evolution

Evolution is the slow change in living things over many generations. Individuals in a population differ slightly from each other. Those with features that help them survive and reproduce in their environment pass those features to their young.

This process is called natural selection. Over millions of years it has led to a huge variety of species, from tiny insects to giant whales. Giraffes with longer necks could reach more leaves, so they had more offspring.

Real-life uses of Evolution

  • Developing new medicines by understanding how bacteria evolve resistance
  • Breeding dog and crop varieties that have useful traits
  • Explaining why similar animals share ancestors

Frequently asked questions about Evolution

Does evolution happen to individual animals?

No. An individual does not change its traits during its life. Evolution happens across generations in a population.

Did humans evolve from monkeys?

No. Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago, and each species has evolved along its own path.

Is evolution a theory or a fact?

Evolution is supported by huge amounts of evidence from fossils, DNA and observations. The theory explains how it happens.
