Reading Scales

A scale on a measuring tool has marks that show values, often with smaller lines between the main numbers. Read the scale carefully and work out what each small line stands for before you read the measurement. Some scales are numbered in steps of two or five.

Some scales have very tiny marks, and scientists often use magnifying glasses to read them accurately. Reading the scale from directly above helps avoid errors caused by looking at an angle.
