The Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher sprays a substance onto a fire to cool it, smother it or stop the chemical reaction that keeps it burning. Different types are designed for different kinds of fire, such as wood, electrical or cooking fires. Using the wrong type can make a fire worse.

Fire extinguishers are colour-coded so people can choose the right type for each fire. Adults should know how to use one, and everyone should leave the building if the fire spreads.
