Tibetan Prayer Flags

Prayer flags are coloured cloth squares printed with prayers and hung outdoors in Tibet and the Himalayas. The wind is believed to carry the prayers across the land. The flags are often arranged in a set order of five colours, each linked to an element.

Prayer flags are replaced over time as the weather fades them. Many people hang new flags for special occasions, and the faded old ones are left to return to the earth.
