Texture and Pattern

Texture is how something feels or looks like it feels: rough, smooth, bumpy. A pattern is a repeated design. Artists use both to make pictures interesting.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

Rubbing a crayon over paper on a leaf shows its texture.

All about Texture and Pattern

Texture describes how a surface feels, such as rough, smooth or bumpy. In art, texture can be real, which you can touch, or implied, which means it looks like it would feel a certain way. Artists create texture with brushstrokes, layers of paint or added materials.

A pattern is a design that repeats, such as stripes, spots or zigzags. Patterns can be regular, like tiles on a floor, or random, like the scattered leaves on a forest floor. Combining texture and pattern makes artwork more interesting to look at.
