All about Instrument Families
Instruments in an orchestra are grouped into families according to how they make sound. Strings, such as the violin, cello and harp, make sound from vibrating strings. Woodwinds, such as the flute and clarinet, use air blown across or through a reed or hole.
Brass instruments, such as the trumpet and trombone, are played by buzzing the lips into a metal tube. Percussion instruments, such as drums, xylophones and cymbals, are struck, shaken or scraped to make sound.
